Transcriptionists are written communication experts who turn audio and video recordings into organized and accurate written documents for clients across a wide variety of industries. Common types of transcriptions include interviews, meetings, conferences, dictations, telephone conversations, and speeches. Creating a high quality transcription requires the ability to understand complex terminology, accurately proofread and edit documents, and deliver client projects under time sensitive deadlines. A transcriptionist must be an adept listener with keen attention to detail in order to be successful.

Medical Transcriptionist Position Requirements:

A minimum of two year’s experience in a hospital or clinical setting, or with another medical transcription service.

  • You must own your own computer with active antivirus software, a licensed copy of MSWord, and Internet access.
  • You should have an excellent command of the English language and the ability to proofread your work accurately, as well as the ability to decipher various dialects ensuring the accuracy of reports.
  • You must be willing to work at least 20 hours a week, complete assigned work within a given turnaround time and be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement.

How to Become a Medical Transcriptionist

Legal Transcriptionist Position Requirements:

A minimum of 1-year experience transcribing legal or verbatim dictation.

How Fast Should a Transcriptionist Type?

The ability to type quickly and accurately is essential for any transcriptionist. Transcriptionists should be able to type at least 50 wpm, but in order to meet hard deadlines, candidates should strive for typing speeds of 75-100 words per minute. Efficiency is a key aspect of this role and is vital for ensuring client satisfaction.

Do Transcriptionists Need to Go to College?

While transcriptionists are generally not required to have a bachelor’s degree, you should complete an associate degree program or training certification program to pursue a position in the field. These can often be completed in under one to two years. Additional credentials such as the RMT (Registered Medical Transcriptionist) and CMT (Certified Medical Transcriptionist), are recommended for transcriptionists in the medical industry to further refine their knowledge of the industry.

How Can You Become A Medical Transcriptionist?

To become a medical transcriptionist, you’ll need to acquire a strong understanding of terminology within the medical field. Medical transcriptionists are expected to have knowledge of procedures, treatments, pharmacology, and anatomy in order to transcribe accurate patient documents and reports. While medical transcriptionists can and do work from home, pursuing an internship or entry level position at a doctor’s office or medical facility is a viable way to gain grounded experience and familiarity with industry terms and protocols.
